4. Two cases that seem to question the CPH

4.1 Isabelle Case History

This case of severe deprivation actually started with the preceding generation. Isabelle’s mother 4 was a deaf, mute and uneducated woman who had lost the sight of her right eye due to an accident in early childhood (Mason 1942: 295). The fact that she didn’t begin to speak was thought to be the result of a lesion in Broca’s area, also due to the accident. Later on, this diagnosis turned out to be wrong: the accident caused deafness and she could have been educated in an appropriate school (ibid.: 298). She communicated with her family via some simple, self-invented gestures, spent the days doing simple kind of housework and wasn’t allowed to leave the house by herself (ibid.: 295).
